At the end of last year, I faced a new professional challenge: working with a fresh team and management in a fast-paced service delivery project. It felt like déjà vu from my first large-scale engagement, over 7 years ago, where I also “inherited” a new team.
Despite the rapid pace and unexpected challenges, I stayed focused and handled one situation at a time.
Key Strategies for Success:
- Start with Why: Understand your team’s purpose and how it fits into the larger organization. This motivates and inspires your team.
- Put People First: Support and develop each team member, recognizing their unique strengths and goals.
- Communicate Clearly: Effective communication is crucial. Listen to your team and provide clear direction and feedback.
- Lead by Example: Set the tone by being a good leader—always do your best and be respectful and professional.
- Be Transparent: Keep your team informed about organizational changes and challenges.
- Be Flexible: Adapt to new situations and find solutions to unexpected problems.
- Be Accountable: Take responsibility for your actions and your team’s actions to earn their trust and respect.
- Celebrate Success: Recognize and celebrate your team’s achievements to boost morale.
- Provide Support: Help your team overcome challenges and obstacles.
- Never Stop Learning: Continuously develop your own skills and knowledge to be a better leader.
After three months in this new role, I believe that combining leadership, communication, and support will yield long-term results.
