In these complicated global times, many talented and hardworking individuals are facing the uncertainty of layoffs.
It’s a situation that brings stress, doubt, and questions about the future. It’s easy to get stuck in paralysis by analysis.
However, it’s also a moment to remind ourselves of the resilience and adaptability that lies within us.
The Romanians have a saying : “orice șut în fund, un pas înainte” and there is some truth in that old saying.
Simon Sinek, in “The Infinite Game” book, shares a powerful notion that resonates deeply with me, especially after the pandemic years: “Life is an infinite game, and in the infinite game, there are no winners or losers, only ahead and behind. The goal is not to beat the competitors but to outlast them“(not a 100% quote, just the gist of the idea).
This perspective could bring hope and resilience. It reminds us that our careers and lives are not defined by temporary setbacks or the current state of affairs. Instead, they are shaped by how we respond, adapt, and continue to move forward, even in the face of adversity.
A couple of grounding questions that help me :
- What was I doing 10 years ago?
- What do I want to be able to say 10 years from now ? (start with the end in mind)
Long story short, most likely you will not even remember or give great importance to the current setback, life is more than just our jobs.
Try to remember the year 2010 and what were you doing, what phone was hot back then, your job? Etc. you get the picture.
As we navigate these turbulent times, Simon Sinek got it right, let’s try to embrace the infinite mindset and play the long game.
Let’s support each other, share opportunities, and remember that this moment, as challenging as it may be, is just a chapter in our longer journey. The paths ahead are many, and with our collective strength and resilience, we will not only emerge from this but also find new avenues to thrive.
To those affected, remember: Your value and abilities extend far beyond a job title or a role. This is a time for reflection, growth, and new beginnings. The infinite game continues, and so does your journey.
